APPLIED BIOLOGY
|
General objectives of the course
At the end of this course, the trainee should be able to;
- Demonstrate understanding of the general ecological interrelationship of organisms
- Demonstrate understanding of the physiological processes of living organisms
- Demonstrate understanding of plants and animals in terms of their breeding, care, diseases infecting them and their economic implications
- Use biological tools correctly in biological techniques in a laboratory setting
- Observe safety measures in biological laboratory
- Accurately prepare laboratory reports
- Supervise laboratory work of other students
Duration
The course is designed to last three calendar years. KNEC is in the process of
making it a modular course. The pattern of attendance is evening, weekend
and regular classes.
Entry Requirements
- Passed a relevant craft course
- Passed Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with minimum mean grade of C- in each of the following subjects: English, Mathematics, Biology Or Biological Science, Chemistry or physical science.

Examinations
The Kenya National Examinations Council will offer external examinations for Diploma in Applied Biology. Internal examinations will be conducted by the College. The College will issue statements of results for internal examinations to the trainees.

This course is aimed at providing learners with knowledge and skills in biological processes, their application and practice. The course prepares the trainees for a career in laboratory work in learning institutions, pharmaceutical manufacturing establishments, research organizations and wildlife and conservation facilities such as museums, herbaria and game reserves. Graduate of this curse can also take up a career as a pharmaceutical representative. The college has set up a section that will link up students and potential employers.

CERTIFICATE SCIENCE LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY
General objectives of the course
By the end of the course, the trainee should be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of the principles underlying laboratory techniques in relation to science laboratories
- Set up various laboratory apparatus
- Follow procedures correctly in carrying out laboratory assignments and obtain accurate results
- Identify the appropriate equipment and materials for given laboratory procedure.
- Observe safety precautions in the science laboratory with respect to equipment and personnel
- Respond appropriately and adequately in case of an emergency
- Compile a laboratory investigation report
Course Duration
The course is designed to take two calendar years (1980 hours). 1650 hours is allocated for theory work while 330 hours (about one semester) is allocated to industrial attachment. The curriculum is offered in modular form, where passing module one is a prerequisite for
going on to module two. Industrial attachment will be after module one.
Entry Requirements
Candidates are expected to attend the course in a KNEC approved college for the course.
The minimum entry requirements will are:
- A pass in Kenya certificate of secondary education (KCSE) with an average grade of D plain
- Equivalent qualifications as determined by Kenya National Examination Council.
Examinations
The Kenya National Examinations Council will offer external examinations for certificate in medical laboratory technology. Internal examinations will be conducted by the College. The College will issue statements of results for internal examinations to the trainees.

DIPLOMA IN PHARMARCY
Introduction
The integration of the Eastern African region has resulted in a tremendous demand for pharmaceutical service providers. All the East African states are currently experiencing a serious shortage of pharmaceutical service providers, both in the private and public sectors. For this reason, some of the states e.g. Kenya has seen it prudent to accredit a select number of private colleges to mount the Diploma course in pharmacy to augment the dwindling numbers in the market place. Resulting from this approach, Royal College of science and technology was accredited by Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) to offer the course.
At the end if this course, the trainee should be able to:
- Interpret a medical prescription and accurately dispense medicines in medical institutions.
- Compound pharmaceutical dosage forms.
- Prepare sterile pharmaceutical dosage forms.
- Understand and promote rational use of drugs.
- Appreciate the legal aspects governing pharmacy practice.
- Operate drug marketing distribution and dispensing services
- Provide patient counseling services on drug utilization and handling
Course Duration
This is a non-modular course designed to take three academic years (nine semesters) including one semester of practical attachment.
Entry Requirements
Students wishing to take a diploma in pharmaceutical technology in Royal College should satisfy the following minimum requirements:
- Must have passed Kenya certificate of secondary education (KCSE) with an average grade of C (plain) or its equivalent.
- Cluster subjects of C (plain) in English language, chemistry (or physical science), biology (or biological science) and physics or mathematics.
- A grade of C plain in Kiswahili will be an added advantage.
Aspiring students should note that it is possible to take a bridging course for any of the subjects where a minimum requirement has not been attained. The bridging course is offered and examined by KNEC.
Career Opportunities
Students graduating with a diploma in pharmaceutical technology from Royal College currently qualify to apply to pursue the course in a university approved to offer the course by PPB. In addition, career opportunities are available in government and private hospitals, research laboratories, private pharmacies, pharmaceutical distributors, pharmaceutical industries and NGOs concerned with human and animal health. Kenya is currently exporting pharmaceutical personnel to Southern Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi and soon, to Somalia.
At Royal College, students are additionally and separately prepared for a role in pharmaceutical sales management and medical detailing as pharmaceutical representatives.

DIPLOMA IN MEDICAL LABORATORY
General objectives of the course
By the end of the course, the trainee should be able to:
- Set up various laboratory apparatus
- Follow procedures correctly in carrying out laboratory assignments and obtain accurate results
- Safely operate and take care of laboratory equipment
- Respond appropriately and adequately in case of an emergency
- To carry out tests and investigations of diseases in humans and animals.
- Manage a biomedical laboratory with minimal supervision.
- Compile a laboratory test report
- Offer first Aid
- Offer leadership in laboratory discipline
Course Duration
The course is designed to take three calendar years of (nine semesters) of which eight semesters are allocated to theory work while one semester is allocated to attachment in hospitals, medical laboratories and similar institutions. The curriculum is offered in stage form where passing stage one is a prerequisite for going on to stage two and passing stage two allows the student to proceeding to stage three. Industrial attachment will be after stage two or as may be arranged by the department.
Entry Requirements
Candidates are expected to attend a KMLTTB approved college for the course. The minimum entry requirements are:
- A C- in Kenya certificate of secondary education (KCSE) with an average grade of C- in English, Mathematics/physics, chemistry/physical science and biology
- Equivalent qualifications as determined by Kenya National Examination Council.
Examinations
The Kenya National Examinations Council will offer external examinations for diploma in medical laboratory technology. Internal examinations will be conducted by the College. The College will issue statements of results for internal examinations to the trainees.Prossional qualifying examinations will be offered by KMLTTB

Graduates of this course will find career opportunities in public and private hospital laboratories, research laboratories, private medical laboratories, dealers in laboratory equipment, chemicals and reagents and glassware. SOCIAL WORK AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
Introduction
This course is offered both at Diploma and certificate leve.
This is the course for students who have a desire to work in communities and dealing with individuals in those communities or the community as a whole. The course helps one to understand the various intervention measures in solving social problems in a society e.g. drug abuse, human rights, children rights, HIV/AIDS etc. The course empowers the learner to use local resources so as to make societies self reliant in food, shelter, water, roads, security, health etc.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, the trainee should be able to:
- Understand various intervention measures in solving social problems in a society
- Use local resources to empower the societies in order to become self reliant
- Understand various methods and approaches used in social and community development activities
- Appreciate the importance of involving other professionals in the development and solving social problems in a society
- Equip the trainee with knowledge, skills and attitude to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and other pandemic
- To formulate a project proposal
Duration of the Course
Institutions offering this course should be recognized and approved by MOHEST. Royal College is an approved college by the ministry. The course is designed to have duration of nine semesters for diploma and six semesters for certificate offered in modular form. One of the semesters will be allocated for attachment in an institution or organization where social work and community development issues are addressed. The course attendance can be full time, evenings and weekends.

Candidates for the examinations must at the time of application for the examinations have completed the course and will have attained a minimum of 75% of class attendance.
Career Opportunities
Students graduating with a diploma or certificate in social work and community development from Royal College can find work in a wide variety of areas. Most graduates of this course are employed in the NGO, and faith based sectors as well as in government hospitals, private hospitals and community based organizations.

DIPLOMA FOOD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Introduction
Institutions providing instructions in this course must be recognized and approved by MOHEST. The college must provide facilities for practical work as outlined by the inspectorate department of the ministry.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course the trainee should be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of the principles of food processing
- Apply acquired knowledge and skills to process specific foods
- Alleviate causes of food spoilage
- Demonstrate practical ability to carry out food preservation techniques
- Manage small scale food processing plant and systems
- To carry out tests and investigations of human and animals food.
- Manage a food processing unit with minimal supervision.
- Carry out analytical tests and microbiological quality assurance of plant and animal based foods.
Course Duration
This is a non-modular course designed to take three academic years (nine semesters) including one semester of practical attachment.
Entry Requirements
Diploma Level
- A pass in a relevant certificate course
- An average grade of C- in biology or biological science, chemistry or physics or physical science. Candidates with good grades in home science or agriculture have an added advantage.
- An approved equivalent qualification.
Certificate level
- An average grade of D+ in biology or biological science, chemistry or physics or physical science. Candidates with good grades in home science or agriculture have an added advantage.
- An approved equivalent qualification.
Aspiring students should note that it is possible to take a bridging course for any of the subjects where a minimum requirement has not been attained. The bridging course is offered and examined by KNEC.

Students graduating with a diploma in food technology from Royal College currently qualify to apply to pursue the course in a university. In addition, career opportunities are available in government and private tourist hotels, agricultural research laboratories, private food outlets, food distributors, food industries and NGOs concerned with human and animal food. Kenya is currently exporting food technologists to Southern Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi and soon, to Somalia. At Royal College, students are additionally and separately prepared for a role in food sales management.

AGROVET BUSINESS MANAGEMENT
Introduction
Kenya lacks adequate numbers of trained personnel to offer services to animal and crop farmers and as a result, there are many entrepreneurs who trade in animal and crop chemicals but who are themselves not trained in this discipline. It is recognized that they are filling in a serious gap in the market hence they cannot be wished away. In addition, in quest for Kenya’s vision 2030, this service must be made available through out the country and in numbers that assist farmers to achieve the best they can possibly be. Royal College wishes to mount a short course in this regard, whose objectives are outlined below.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, the trainee should be able to demonstrate understanding of the following:
- Definition of a pest in animals, plants and in the household environment
- The diseases Pests cause in animals and crops
- Chemical Control of pests in animals, crops and in households.
- Non-chemical control of pests in animals, crops and in households.
- Pest borne diseases in animals, humans and crops
- Mechanisms by which pesticides kill pests
- Hazards associated with pesticide use
- Design of an Agrovet shop: air, ventilation, sanitation, water supply, location, wall and shelving finishes, ceiling and roof.
- Appropriate storage for products for internal use, external use and toxic substances
- Appropriate storage for seeds and seed related products
Duration of the Course
The certificate course is designed to take a duration of 12 months. Candidates must shoe evidence of having undergone an attachment training in an environment where pesticides are handled for a period not less than three months before the award of the certificate. Learners have a choice between full time, evenings and weekends and distant learning.

Students entering this course should have any of the following minimum requirements:

DIPLOMA IN DIETETIC MANAGEMENT
Introduction
As a result of changing lifestyles, the world over, Kenya included is experiencing a host of lifestyle diseases amongst its people. Many of these diseases are related to the diet people are consuming. As household incomes rise, and as more people find themselves with disposable incomes, there is increased consumption of animal based foods and alcohol related beverages. This has resulted in types of diseases which can be checked using diet management, avoiding the deterioration of the disease to an extent that requires taking of medicines.
Objectives for the Course
At the end of this course, the learner should be able to demonstrate:
- Acquisition of practical skills, knowledge and attitudes required in the profession of dietetic management.
- Recognition of aspects of modern health care system in the country
- Understanding of lifestyle diseases
- Understanding of the role of diet therapy in managing lifestyle diseases
- Understanding of the health consequences of dietary deficiencies.
- Appreciation of the scientific basis of diet therapy

Duration of the Course
This is a modular course designed to take a duration of 2970 hours out of which 2310 hours will be spent in classroom academic work , while 660 hours will be used for industrial attachment.

Trainees entering this course should have the following minimum requirements.
Passed Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with an average grade C- (minus) or in possession of a certificate in food and beverage production and service or an approved equivalent qualification by KNEC.
Examinations
The Kenya National Examinations Council will offer external examinations for diploma in dietetic management. Internal examinations will be conducted by Royal College. The College will issue statements of results for internal examinations to the trainees. Candidates for the examinations must at the time of application for the examinations, have completed the course and will have attained a minimum of 75% of class attendance.
Career Opportunities
Students graduating with a diploma in dietetic management from Royal College currently qualify to apply to pursue the course at a degree level in a university. In addition, career opportunities are available in government and private hospitals, homes for the aged, children orphanages and NGOs, CBOs and within communities. HEALTH RECORDS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Introduction
The process of treating patients , tracking disease epidemics and outbreaks involves generation of massive amounts of records. These records requires to be preserved in a manner that allow easy retrieval when patient follow up many days, months or years later. The records may be preserved in a manual system or in an electronic system. Management of data has, in the recent times been revolutionized by the huge advances in information communication technology, and lately by mobile telephony. without organized storage of patient data, it is not possible to effectively treat diseases as it is virtually impractical for a healthcare provider to remember every aspect of a visiting patient along period later. For this reason, health records professionals are crucial to any national, institutional or community health management system.
This course is offered at both Diploma and Certificate levels.
Objectives of the Course
At the end of this course, the trainee will be able to:
- Collect health information and format it into a storable format
- Advice on the most appropriate health records storage system.
- Retrieve health records swiftly and accurately when need arises
- Statistically analyze health information
- Draw conclusions from the results of health data analysis
- Make available recommendations to institution management based on trends revealed by the analyzed health data.
- Respond to changing trends in health information system
- Embrace technological advances in information communication technology as it unfolds
- To professionally communicate with other healthcare team members.
- To work as a medical secretary in busy clinics and medical centrs.
Course Duration
The diploma in health records and information system shall be offered over a period of 2088 hours. A candidate must complete a minimum of six (6) weeks of attachment in a recognized institution after which the candidate shall submit a written report for grading. In addition, an examinable research project must be carried out in the final academic year in an area of interest selected by the candidate.
Certificate course takes one year.
Entry Requirements
The minimum entry requirement for Health Records and Information Technology course is as follows: At Kenya certificate of secondary education, a C- or a certificate in Health Records and Information Technology.
Entry at certificate level requires a D plain
Examinations
